Oh, this was such a fun read! I definitely agree with you in that the ghastly nature of the film is still eerie as all hell. I remember as a kid the iconic groan always scared me out of my socks. In recent times, it’s a lot of fun to visit the film… the simple character designs still hold up, even though the plot is a bit thin.

I haven't seen the movie again since my first viewing at the cinema - like you say, it was THE horror to see at the time, and Sarah Michelle Geller was making the transition to the big screen - and I don't remeber much except for the sense of dread. But that opening scene, of Bill Pullman on the balcony... that moment and image has never left me.
Yeah, that opening scene stuck with me, too, over the years. Even though Pullman delivers an otherwise utterly bored performance in the rest of the film, haha.
