Loved this piece! I just finished rewatching the series after reading Woke Up This Morning. I found the entire series so much more psychologically and emotionally fraught than when I dipped back into the series maybe 7 or 8 years ago. Even with groundbreaking characters such as Walter White, who would not have been possible without Tony Soprano, the series and its characters feel fresher and more vital than ever. Maybe because we've been through such a short, but intense, sweeping era of our own history that has put a range of our ethical values to the test so that uncomfortable ambivalence you describe is more familiar now than it was when the show aired. The Sopranos deserves its place in the canon of revolutionary television for sure.

Thanks, Sheila! I rewatched the entire show about 2 years ago, but every time I do, I always find something new, something different, something more thought-provoking than on a previous watch. It's really a series that keeps on giving and never becomes tedious no matter how many times you see it. Walter White, Jax Teller, Vic Mackey, etc., will always owe a lot to The Sopranos and Tony Soprano, no doubt.

I just put Woke Up This Morning on my reading list, thanks for bringing it up. I really need to read that.

And yes, as we age, and experience new things that form our ethical values, the show will always feel fresher and vital every time we revisit it. As much as I love Breaking Bad and True Detective (S1), The Sopranos will always be my number 1 favorite that I can watch at any time and anywhere.

I have the same experience revisiting this series. I am always in awe of Gandolfini & Falco & Lorraine Bracco’s consummate acting skills. The first episode alone has the energy of live theatre in those interactions between Tony & Melfi. What a gift Gandolfini was & what a tragic loss. I think you will deeply appreciate Woke Up This Morning for all its additional insight (and you’ll definitely get sucked into a series binge if you’re not there already) 😉

That's for sure, haha :)

If you haven't seen the documentary about Gandolfini, I highly recommend it. It's availaible on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hB6i-f1nXMk). I've seen it like 5 times. He was truly a treasure and went too soon.

Oh thanks! I’ll dig in-already feeling the post series let down.
