Watched this after reading your article and really enjoyed it. I wish they'd cut one scene towards the end, but otherwise it was really good. They don't really make low-key midbuget movies like this anymore. At least not much.
After Frank has a heart attack, there's that elaborate dream sequence where he confronts his children at a dinner table. I just feel the movie would've been better without it, as it over-explains everything that was simply hinted at earlier.
That's why I'm still kinda hesitant to watch the original because I grew to love and adore this version so much. But knowing Tornatore and his filmography, I suspect he didn't miss with it either :D

That's fair. I like that scene mostly because of how fantastic the child actors are, but I can totally understand why you felt it was unnecessary.
I do like Sam Rockwell. May need to queue this up one day. I do have a feeling maybe the original is superior? Giuseppe Tornatore ain't no slouch.
